VERDON. Bertram de Verdun, the progenitor of this distinguished race, came in with the Conqueror, and was lord of Farneham-Royal, co. Bucks, which he held in chief in 1087, by the serjeanty of providing a glove for the King's right hand, on the day of his coronation, and of supporting his right hand while he held the royal sceptre. ■\''erdun is a town in the N.E. of France, department of Meuse; and it has been suggested that the family were derived from the Counts or Viscounts of Verdun.
