Jones was established as a fixed surname in England in the 13th century but fixed surnames did not begin to be used in Wales until the 16th to 18th century, with urban areas adopting fixed surnames earlier that rural areas of Wales. A number of Americans descend from English rather than Welsh Jones family lines.
